1944 Batmobile

Batman #20 started off 1944 with the first ever Batmobile cover. Shown bursting straight out of the book with Batman leaning out the side window, Robin behind the wheel, and a windshield full of bullet holes, this now iconic image caught everyone's attention

Drawn by Dick Sprang, it retained the overall design of the Batmobiles of the time with the Bat-mask grill and large roof fin. However, his car used fender skirts on all four corners, had no bumpers, and sported a pair of dramatic red stripes at the trim and belt lines on the car. It became the first "standard" design, and was used on and off for the next few years, until 1950 when the "all-new Batmobile" was introduced in Detective Comics #157.
