In 2005, Frank Miller once again wrote his own version of the Dark Knight. This time, he is paired with artist Jim Lee for a retelling of Batman's recruitment of Robin (in events likely to lead into The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again).

This Batmobile first appeared at the end of issue #1, obliterating a GCPD car while arriving to pick up the future Robin. Issue #2 took place almost entirely in the car, with Batman explaining how the world "really was" to Dick. After a violent police chase, Batman, Robin, & the Batmobile took to the skies with a conversion mode similar to the one seen in DKSA. Then, in issue #3, a submarine mode was introduced, allowing the Bamobile to travel effortlessly underwater.

While out on patrol after leaving Dick back at the Bat Cave, Batman has a run-in with Black Canary. When he offers her a ride home, she's surprised to hear that he has a car - as it turns out, the Batmobile that arrives to pick them up is a different one than the car introduced in issue #1.

While the first car in this series had an "old school" sports car look with rounded fenders and circular headlights, this Batmobile is clearly a modern vehicle. The wide stance, twin grilles, and compound headlights suggest a European-based car like the Lamborghini Murcielago or Ferrari 433. In addition to being based on a newer car, the design has been updated from the single-fin look to a more contemporary dual-fin design (including a spoiler between the fins). Although this Batmobile exhibits none of the abilities shown by its predecessor, it appears to have one advantage in the form of generous trunk space: Batman is able to transport a prisoner despite Canary using the only other bucket seat.

A third Batmobile was introduced in issue #9 of DC All Star Batman & Robin: The Boy Wonder. It only appeared for a single spread after Batman & Robin's meeting with Green Lantern, so no specific details of the car are available. It does confirm a couple of trends in this comic, though: first, Batman would do well to install wipers on his Batmobiles, as he is always driving around in the rain (actually, Batmobiles in the rain seem to be a Jim Lee tradition). Second, the number of fins corresponds to the design phase: every new car that shows up so far has one more fin than its predecessor.

The Dark Knight Returns Batmobile

Years after Batman's retirement, Bruce Wayne resurrects Batman when a gang called the Mutants threatens Gotham City. So begins one of the most popular "alternate" Batman storylines ever.

This is the largest Batmobile ever, easily straddling a three lane highway. Batman mentions how he "modified her during some nasty riots" 15 years prior, and that the only thing that can damage it "isn't from this planet." It easily shrugs off gunfire, grenades, and rocket launcher attacks, and offers its own array of heavy weaponry. In addition to its offensive capabilities, this Batmobile is equipped with an extensive medical bay.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again Batmobile

The follow-up to The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, was set three years later and featured Batman teamed with other members of the Justice League doing battle in a dystopic world.

This Batmobile was much more traditional than the previous tank, with a bat-mask, enclosed wheels under fat fenders, and a central roof fin. "Miller" touches such as the heavily-treaded tires and blocky design make the car unique, but the car's alternate mode is where it really stands out. With extendable wings & control surfaces, retracting wheels, and a pair of jet engines, this Batmobile can take to the skies as a completely air-worthy vehicle.
