In 1998, the new Batmobile appeared in the comics as a two-seat coupe with much more aggressive lines than previous cars. The nose of the car was transformed into a snarling face with the bat mask moved up onto the horizontal surface of the hood. The fins are nearly gone, both from the roof and fenders, and have been replaced with rows of swept back spines on the front and rear decks resembling raised fur on an animals' back. The roof and fenders, however, resembled the earliest Batmobile with a split windshield and "fat fendered" design. Other features of the car included armor plated body panels, twin thruster outlets at the bottom of the rear panel, and a "monster truck" off road mode with four wheel drive and massive tires for travelling cross-country. It was phased out in 2000 with the introduction of a smaller, sleeker Batmobile, but has remained a fan favorite and was used as late as 2008's Death Mask miniseries. |
